The objective of ASTM E488 (concrete anchor testing) is to determine the tensile and shear strengths of cast-in-place or post installed mechanical or epoxy anchors into cracked and un-cracked concrete. Where un-cracked concrete applies to both cast-in-place and post installed anchors, installation into cracked concrete generally applies to post-installed concrete based on the existing concrete conditions. Provided the concrete are the same or similar design mix, the structural performance of anchors in cracked concrete to resist shear and tension loading is typically lower than that of anchors in un-cracked concrete.
The test method consists of four types of loading procedure: static, seismic, fatigue and shock load, which all or partial loading procedures can be used for evaluating anchor product-specific to a standard or criteria. The standard also addresses anchor testing under environmental conditions.
QAI in Rancho Cucamonga, CA has recently completed a large concrete anchor testing program utilizing static and seismic loading procedures in un-cracked and cracked concrete for certification. The program also consisted of the anchor recognition in steel deck construction for floor and roof applications. Part of the testing program was construction of concrete slabs and steel decking slabs to receive the anchors. Refer to photos of the testing program.
