Information Technology
The Information Technology started at the time when first mechanical computer was built by Charles Babbage in 1820, each command was entered manually, which was named as operating systems later. One hundred years later in 1946 the University of Pennsylvania reported the first programable general-purpose computer. AT&T Bell Labs in the 1960s and 1970s built operating system called Unix. Unix and its variant including the famous Linux which lead to some earlier models of the Mac PC. In the 1990s, computers got connected to the internet and the field of Information Technology was born (IT).
The Information Technology Equipment (ITE) is a combination of three different groups of the same technologies which started independently. These three industries groups were Telecommunication Equipment (TE), Data Processing Equipment (EDP) and Office and Business Equipment (OBE). The first merger was of Data Processing Equipment (EDP) and Office and Business Equipment (OBE). It was named Information Processing Equipment (IPE). Just like other things technology and industry demands brought Telecommunication Equipment (TE) and Information Processing Equipment (IPE) together and it was named Information Technology Equipment (ITE).
The equipment that is covered under the Information Technology includes devices that have a primary function related to the collection, transfer, storage, or processing of data. For example, office equipment, banking equipment which includes electronic devices like computers, display monitors, keyboards, and printers. The other example of ITE equipment is Telecommunications Equipment (multiplexers, switches), Servers, Drives & Network HUBs.
In addition to this, wireless devices are widely used in the Information Technology Equipment as well. The keyboard and mice are even wirelessly communicating with the computer. From the testing and certification perspective both technologies; wireless and non-wireless require testing and certification. Pre-approved wireless modules make it easier the addition to the ITE equipment but may not work in all cases.
The Information Technology Council (ITI) is doing a great work trying to support countries that make it reasonable to import and export ITE products with the impact of EMC regulations. The ITI has published the 2021 Global Benchmark Report, ITE EMC Regulations and their impact on the Ease of Doing Business. This report is worth reading not just by manufacturers or design teams, but important for governments officials of every country. ITI has scored 15 countries and European Union (EU), Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).
The objective of this report was to rate the EMC regulations for ITE equipment impact the ability to do business for manufacturers seeking to import and sell their products in these markets. Four countries did an exceptional job, these countries are Australia, Japan, Morocco, and New Zealand and scored perfect score of 30 points. Where Canada scored 20, US scored 24 and EU scored 22 points.
We can keep going into the detail of testing and certification of Information Technology Equipment but just like other industries and technologies it depends on your target market and the technology. Since Information Technology Equipment is used in almost in all technologies; wireless, medical, residential, commercial, military and avionics. Organizing and working with knowledgeable team is key to putting your products on the market in a timely manner.
